THE MOUTH OF THE SOUTH

Growing up, I was called "the mouth of the south" and my cousin, Amy, was called "the mouth of the north."

Joey seems to have all intentions of carrying on the title.

She is adding on a word or two a day.

Her two latest being "Belle" & "Beast." And not from watching the movies, mind you, but from reading the books. By the way, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy... she calls them all "Mickey". She says "Mickey" very clearly now. She says "Donald Duck" or "Duckey", and occasionally Minnie is called "Min", but for the most part, all things Disney are "Mickey".

Besides adding vocabulary, she is starting to really combine words.
She knows and uses "Where".
"Where Puppy?" When she hears the dog barking.
"Read Book." When she has just finished prying your hand open to give you a book and plopped herself on your lap.
"Topee" Which means "Stop it".
Sticking "Pease" on the end of everything she wants.

She also knows how to count to 3, but will only say 3. That is because when we say "One, Two, Three!!!", then we are going to swing her in the air at 3. She knows it, so sings along with the "Tree!" When I show her numbers or count with her, she is quiet for the 1 & 2, and then sings out the "Tree". So she has the concept, but only wants to join in on the fun number.

THE MAGIC WORD

Joey learned "Pease" about a month ago.
She is missing the "L". My mom tried to get her to say the "L":

Grandma: "PPlllleeasse. La, la, la, la."

Joey: "Pppeeeaasseee. La, la, la, la."

It was too funny.

But it's her new favorite word. "Book Pease." "Read Book Pease." "Up Pease." "Daddy Up Pease."

When we visit Mom-Mom's, she walks in, gives Mom-Mom a hug and kiss, walks over to the kitchen island where SHE KNOWS the M&M Nutcracker dispenser is, get on her tippie toes, reach up with her little fingers, look back at us and say, "Peeeassseee!"

It's just too cute to say no too. And she knows it.
No progress on "Thank you" yet.

SWIM LESSONS

Joey had her first swim lesson today!
She has class every week day for 2 weeks.
She did a lot of screaming and crying this time and her lovely ended up swimming with her. It is normal for the first 3 days. After that, she needs to suck it up.
She has been pitchin' a fit when I drop her off at the KIDS KLUB at LA FITNESS when I work out as well. She is in full toddler mode and has a moderate case of separation anxiety. She cries when I leave, the lady gives Joey the lovey and then takes it away when she calms down. She then enjoys playing with the kids and toys and is happy when I get back and when I peak in the window.
But we have been going to the gym several days a week for about 2 weeks now and she is not getting better.
I think of it as good practice for when she has to go to daycare.

JOEY UPDATE

I was reminded that there is more to keeping up to date with Joey then just seeing pictures of where she's been. Following will be some Joey update entries.

I've had trouble trying to upload videos as of lately. Don't know why. I might start uploading on to Youtube, and then post the link.

SHE'S NOT NAKED...

...She still has her water shoes on.
I thought it was too cold, but she didn't.
What started as splashing our toes in the water ended up like this.

She then took off streaking across the yard.
Awww. Grandma and a naked baby. Nothing cuter.
Now that could be a Christmas Card.
Now a wet bottomed Mommy and baby are heading in for a warm bath.

THE BRADY BUNCH

Okay, so I've lost some people in my traveling.
All of my family (Mom, Dad, Chris) and Mark, Joey & I went to the NC house. From there, everyone else went home and Joey and I headed East, to Raleigh, to visit Kev, Sue & Kennedy. Joey and I then headed west, to Charlotte, to pick up Becca & Emma (Luke still had school) and then we drove north for Ohio. Chris then flew up to meet us for a few days so he could go to Cedar Point with us. Oh yeah, and to visit Grandma & Grandpa, of course.

We had dinner with the Brady Bunch one day.
(Becca is taking the picture)
Patty is so good with the babies. She even changed a poopy diaper. If she lived closer, she would definitely be on my babysitter list.
Lauren got some practice too.
Maybe she'll need it soon? (wink )

SHE THINKS MY TRACTOR'S SEXY

A lawnmower is much more then just a lawn mower to Grandpa.
He has 2 of them; this old red one and his new John Deere.
Grandpa rides a lawnmower out to get the mail every morning. He rides one to shoo the geese away. He's even fished from them before.

Joey likes all things you can drive.
Give her a couple minutes on a machine, she'll know how to drive it.

SWINGIN' & FISHIN'

Joey loves her Grandma & Grandpa Higgins.
And she really loves their house too.
It's in the country, has an old fashioned swing-set, lake, lots of green grass, a water-bed, people who want to pay attention to her... what's not to love?

Higher Mommy, higher!

Grandpa has a problem with catfish in his lake. So we did our best to rid him of them. We must have caught close to 2 dozen of them.
Course', we were cheating. Joey and I were dropping fish food in, and when they came up to eat, everyone else started fishin'.
Becca caught the trifecto of Grandpa's lake: Catfish, Bass & Bluegill.
But she didn't touch a single one.
Joey, on the other hand, pet every fish she could.
She also learned to move her mouth like a fish and when you ask her "What does the fish say?" She will show you.

1ST MOVIE THEATER MOVIE

Joey just saw her first movie in the movie theater... TOY STORY 3.
(You knew it was going to be a Disney.)
I mean, can you think of something better for Mark to do with his little girl on Father's Day?

She did wonderfully. She sat on his lap, reached her hand into my popcorn bag occasionally, and kept her sippy cup in the drink holder (it fits). She did get a little fidgety about 1/2 through, but that was nothing that her lovey couldn't fix.Mommy cried when all the toys held hands at that important part of the movie (I won't spoil it) but Joey was just enthralled.

AND SHE'S FREE!
I had no idea that kids under 3 were free! I don't know if I agree with that. Seems to me, that if you take up a seat, you take up a seat and it doesn't matter how old you are.
But as long as she is free and does so well in the theater, she'll be coming to the movies with Mommy & Daddy more often from now on!

VISITING KENNEDY (AND HER PARENTS)

Joey & Kennedy play so well together.

Kennedy was nice enough to share her toys. Joey liked her exersaucer.
Joey likes to tear up her port-a-crib before going to sleep.
Strolling at a downtown art festival.

Ice Cream Shop with sofas and kids reading books.
Awesome.

TAIL OF THE DRAGON

Chris bought these pictures from KILLBOY.COM.
When we were riding the DRAGON, I noticed guys taking pictures of all the bikers as they went past. They then post them for sale on their website. They have pics going back for almost a decade.

Here is Dad & I, coming around a bend.
And Chris, who rode with a seriously sprained ankle cause' there was no way he was going to miss it.

MOTORCYCLE MECCA

After we left the Mountain House in Beech, we drove west to ride THE TAIL OF THE DRAGON.
It is an 11 mile long stretch of road with over 300 turns in it.

Base camp for THE TAIL OF THE DRAGON is Deal's Gap Motorcycle Resort.
The Tree of Shame has bits and pieces of riders who have wrecked on the DRAGON.
A word of caution, you might say.
It was going to be way to difficult to get the 3rd bike off the trailer (There were ATVs in the way) so I just rode Bitch on the back of Dad.
But Chris was nice enough to let me borrow his Buel when we got to the end of the run. He just sat and chilled for a bit while I ran back up and down some of the DRAGON on his bike.
The most amazing road I've ever been on.

DEAR MR. GREEN

I wrote an e-mail to MR. GREEN of SIERRA CLUB magazine and he responded. I know a lot of people had the same question so here is the Q & A.

Dear Mr. Green,

In light of the BP disaster in the Gulf, and its Exxon Mobil counterpart off the coast of Nigeria, I just don't know where I'm supposed to buy my gas. Yes, I know the answer is for us to all use less, but in the end, I still need to occasionally fill up the tank. What oil company is the "cleanest?" I'd like to put my money where my mouth is and boycott, but it seems to me if I boycott all that I should, there is nowhere left to buy gas.

Please help,

--

Dear Michelle,

Thanks for getting in touch with your question. A number of people
have asked about what oil company to turn to. As you may know, Sierra
did a "Pick Your Poison" list a few years ago that ranked the oil
companies (See
http://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/pickyourpoison/), and
at that time BP was considered one of the best companies. Obviously it
has completely fallen from grace.

One reason BP had a high rating was that its approaches to alternative
energy and climate change were much more pro-environment than other
companies.

Given the situation, Sierra decided not to redo its “Pick Your Poison”
ratings, but instead to focus its efforts on a campaign to truly get
us Beyond Petroleum. For more information, and to become involved, see
http://letsmovebeyondoil.org/. Unfortunately, without an update of the
list, I can't give you a definitive answer at this time. I'm sorry
about this. I'm hoping to be able to find the time to look into this
more. It's a pretty huge task because there are so many elements to
consider in rating the companies.

Please don't hesitate to contact me again.

Environmentally,

Mr. Green

OIL SPILL PERSPECTIVE

I have been hearing a lot of people talking about boycotting BP because of the oil spill/disaster in the Gulf of Mexico right now.

The following is an editorial piece from THE MIAMI HERALD. I think it gives great perspective on things.

Oil-spill anger applies only to what's visible

FGRIMM@MIAMIHERALD.COM

It's Day 47 of what we regard as an utterly unacceptable environmental disaster. We watch in horror as the first tar balls wash onto the Florida Panhandle's sugar-sand beaches.

It's Day 32 in Akwa Ibom. Not that anyone in the Niger River Delta has bothered to count the days since an offshore spill added another million gallons of crude to an already devastated estuary.

Oil bursting from an oil rig operated by a subsidiary of ExxonMobile has polluted the sea, poisoned tidal marshes and escalated the miseries caused by Niger oil extraction.

But the word ``unacceptable'' has no meaning in Nigeria's bleak oil fields.

The Guardian of London reported last week that the Niger Delta's aging pipes, terminals, pumping stations and offshore oil platforms spill more oil each year than what has leaked from the wreckage of the Deepwater Horizon.

Niger's marshes are just as fragile as those at the mouth of the Mississippi. Nigeria's wildlife is as vulnerable. Local farmers and fishermen have endured much more hurt than their counterparts along the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The African Commission on Human Rights in 2001 and Amnesty International in 2009 documented dramatic human suffering from some 300 spills a year. Fishing and farming have been ruined. Drinking water has been poisoned. Incessant gas burn-offs pollute the air. Amnesty International reports significant and escalating health problems. Wetlands have been transformed into vast apocalyptic landscapes drenched in thick black syrup.

The national government admits that 2,000 major oil spills, some years old, still await cleanup. Nigeria has tough-sounding environmental laws, of course, but no enforcement by a government utterly corrupted by big-oil money.

Nigeria's beleaguered, bullied, persecuted (and occasionally murdered) environmental activists contrast international outrage over the BP spill with the western world's willful indifference to the ruin oil extraction brings to third-world environments.

``We see frantic efforts being made to stop the spill in the U.S.,'' Nnimo Bassey, Nigerian head of Friends of the Earth International, told the Guardian. ``But in Nigeria, oil companies largely ignore their spills, cover them up and destroy people's livelihood and environments.''

About half of Nigeria's oil, a light quality crude favored for gasoline production, makes it to the United States. Yet angry Americans, ready to boycott BP for soiling Florida beaches, have nothing to say about ExxonMobile or Shell's environmental negligence in the Niger Delta.

Hey, it's only Nigeria. American outrage to spilled oil applies only to what we can see from our beach chairs. Last week, African oil analyst Holly Pattenden told a Reuters business reporter, ``If [the BP spill] were in the Niger Delta, no one would be batting an eyelid.''

Oil companies know that if Americans, who consume a quarter of the world's production, can't see the environmental damage, we don't much care. BP dumped tons of toxic dispersant into the Gulf in part because the chemicals keep most of the oil off the surface and away from our beaches. Environmental damage down in the ocean depths may be worse, but if we can't see it, who cares?

Africans must think of Americans as ostrich-like creatures, heads buried in white beach sand, ignoring that we're up to our tail feathers in crude.

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN

Don't worry KaKi, we're just pretending.

The suspension bridge at Grandfather Mountain.
Boy was it cold that day!

Puppy Petey came with us. He went walking with Grandma, Joey & I too.
Did very well, I must say.

One of the bears at the mini zoo by the museum.
Joey loved that.

PADDLE FASTER, I HEAR BANJO MUSIC

My family took off for the mountains on Mother's day weekend and spent a almost a week at the house in Beech Mountain, NC.
After that week, Joey and I would continue on for another 2 weeks of traveling.
ADVENTURES OF THE NOT-SO-STAY-AT-HOME-MOM!

Joey was an awesome traveler thanks to Aunti Mandy's portable Car DVD player.
You can Velcro it on to the back of any car seat head rest, plug it into the cigarette lighter and it has a remote.
Bless Mandy and the makers of that ingenious device.

The view of the back porch. You're actually looking into Tennessee.
Joey loves PUPPY! She doesn't call him Pete, just PUPPY.

WHERE'S MY MIND?

Go to Publix, get out of the car, get ready to put the baby in the cart and then realize you left your list on the kitchen counter top.

Of course you are buying for a recipe you don't know by heart and have to go home to get the list and then come back.

Monday mornings... sing along... Monday mornings...

DISNEY'S ALL STAR MOVIE RESORT

When we walked in our hotel room, we were greeted by this.

The last night we came home, we were greeted by this:

Below is the better end of Bo Peep.

CHECK OUT THE OVERSIZED BATHTUB!

Here's my waterbaby.

Joey was so funny.
She thought it was a bathtub.
She wouldn't stand up (she'll get popped quick if she stands in the tub at home.)

It took a minute of Mommy running around for her to figure out that she was allowed to run around in this bathtub.
Check out Daddy's nifty underwater camera.
